First Diving Experience in Madagascar

In life, we all have those memorable moments that stay with us forever, for me one of the most memorable moments of my life was my first dive. It was an experience of mixed emotions, but it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life and ignited not only a deep seeded passion for the sport, but I set my whole life around it.

My first Dive takes part in Madagascar, I remember as if it was yesterday. I know that I had mixed emotions, I wasn’t afraid of the water. To me it was more of the unknown. The unknown of what may or may not happen. But I need not worry as I was in good hands.

(I was out in Madagascar with a conservation group called Blue Ventures that help with coral and species monitoring, they also take part in projects with the village and helping them with sea cucumber farms).

Back to the Dive we go, so I was worried, but my instructor who is also my mentor (Italo: who happens to own a dive shop in Madagascar and is also one of the best pizza makers, I have ever happened to come across) he put me at ease, and took me by myself to this beach. You need to understand that this beach had a very unique name (poo beach) And the reason for this name, is that the village right the BV base. The village was given the choice between a sewage system or street lights so they decided to go with the street lights. (now they are the only village in about 1000km with street lights) So I’m sure you can now see why it’s called poo beach.

Needless to say, we started to kit up at the beach, and started to wade into the water, keeping a sharp eye out for any nasty surprises that may be lurking in the water.

My biggest worry was putting my head in the water, it felt unusual to breathe through my mouth without having a blocked nose. But as with most things in life, you need to just jump in. And I knew that I had Italo with me.

Once I got my head under the water, all the worries and the mixed emotions suddenly dissipated and it felt familiar and I was home. We went through a few skills and then just relaxed, one of the parts I remember the most was when I completed all my skills. Italo hit my arm (in a well-done manner) But it was hard, which really shocked me.
